Ten “F” Words to Help You Run Your Business

Title got your curiosity up? Good. This article is not going to be about THAT “F” word. It’s going to be about “F” words that will keep you aimed directly at running your business more successfully.

Faith

Have faith that you will eventually succeed in your business. Have a loving trust that what you are doing will pay off one day if you keep going forward creatively and flexibly. Trust that the “seeds” you plant will flower into new business. You will get what you deserve, not what you want.

Fidelity

This is about loyalty+++. Be loyal to running your business YOUR way. Listen to others and get their advice but stay true to your dream and vision. Be loyal to your customers, suppliers, sales people, etc. as they are the ones on whom you depend for success. As Horton the Elephant says in a Dr. Seuss book, “I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant’s faithful one hundred percent.”

Fortitude

Have the courage to do what’s right for your business integrity at the right time. Be strong enough to be honest. Choose integrity over the fast buck. Have the strength to own up to what happens -good or bad and have the strength to repair damage and correct mistakes. The words “I made a mistake. How can I fix it?” are tough to say but will gain you respect from others in business.

Forgiveness

Sometimes you make mistakes. Sometimes others make mistakes and your business suffers. To forgive is a noble act. Forgiving is for the giver, not the receiver as most people think. Let go of the anger, hatred, rage, blame, despondency, revenge, etc. as the toxins they create in your body will kill you and/or your relationships. We all make mistakes. Give people breaks. Give yourself a break too. You’re not perfect in your business. Don’t expect others to be. Remember: the solution is more important than the problem.

Frankness

Be able to confront yourself honestly and openly about what you do and don’t do in your business. You can’t hide from yourself so why not learn all you can so you know who you are, what you stand for, and what you will do and how you will do things in life and business. What do you and your business really stand for? Who is that business person in the mirror?

Fresh Start

Begin again – at any time of the day, month, year! Your business will not be booming in a short time. You will try marketing and sales tactics and fail. Other times you will succeed. Don’t carry negatives into a new business day. Begin a new day with hope, trust, love and charity toward others in your heart. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Help others to rise again and they will remember it.

Food

Many times I get so wrapped up in my work that I forget to eat and drink. Quick snacks and fast food on the run are not healthy. Eat well, several times in the day. This keeps up the energy. If you are run down and tired, you will not perform at your best with customers and suppliers. Sleep is for repair of cells and balancing of chemicals. Food is for energy. We need both when working. How can you possibly run a business properly if you are exhausted and weak?

Fun

I wonder sometimes if business workaholics ever think back to times when they had just plain fun and play? Life and work are two different things. Work should be there so that you can enjoy a life. During the business day, during the week and each month, take time off. Leave business behind to look after itself. Stop thinking about it. Go to a park, play a board game, toss around a ball, hike into a woods. Get out of the office before it becomes a prison!! This renews the inner person who happens to be a business person.

Family

Your family is more important than your work. Business is about earning money. Family is about all the things that really count. Make more time for family than business.

Fitness

When working, it is so easy to just sit and sit and work and work without a break. All the work goes on inside brain cells. Meanwhile the body gets flabby, full of toxins, and weaker in the muscles. It is so easy to gain weight under these conditions. Each day, spend at least 10 minutes away from your business: walking in the morning, afternoon and evening. Exercise, play sports, do gardening, clean up the lawn, jog around the block. Keep moving to keep healthy so that you will be at your best when on the job.

Others to consider:

Forward – look ahead at business possibilities, not backward to what should or might have been
Foundation – build your business with a firm foundation of what you want to do, who you are going to be, values and ethics that will be upheld and keep it solid as you build your business
Freedom – don’t get shackled to a desk, copper pipe, service van, electric wires. Life and work are two different things. You live one and you do the other.

The “F” words mentioned are only a small sample of words that will help business people stay healthy and with a proper perspective with regard to business.
